When I read the short story I remember being so impressed by Annie Proulx's description of Ennis when he was driving away from Jack for the first time, feeling physically ill. When I watched the movie the scene stuck out as well, Heath Ledger just captured the wrecked emotion. Both times there was just this beautiful, tragic truth. It's a story about love. Plain and simple.
